Bacante En Reposo (Resting Bacchante) was painted by the Spanish Master Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. Starting his professional painting career as a historical painter, Sorolla created works that stemmed from Academic conventions. The painter extensively explored Orientalist and mythological motifs, the latter being the group of works in which Bacante En Reposo (Resting Bacchante) fits. At the time of the artwork, Sorolla was completing his time at the Spanish Academy in Rome, and he was mainly exploring Italian-related themes.
Bacante En Reposo (Resting Bacchante) is a nude study in oil. It was painted in one of the last years of Sorolla in Italy, in 1887, measuring 67 x 29 cm( 26.3 x 11.4 in). A woman, who has her face half turned to the audience, is resting on a couch. In the background and covering most of the painting is a wall painted in an intense yellow. The remainder of the picture is mainly done in earthy hues and greys, common elements in Sorolla's palette under Academic influence. The title indicates that the woman is a bacchante, one of the women who engaged in Bacchus's festivals, the Roman equivalent of the Greek Dionysius, god of wine, agriculture, and fertility.
Sorolla was initially studying to become a locksmith, but at 15 years old, he enrolled in the Fine Arts School of San Carlos. Sorolla applied himself assiduously, and his talent began to be noticed by local critics and dealers. After serving in the military, the young artist entered the Spanish Academy at Rome. Sorolla, who had primarily developed his drawing skills, could emerge in the Academic conventions and oil painting techniques. Francisco Pradilla Ortiz, the institution's director who worked with historical and genre paintings, was a significant influence in his early artworks.
While Sorolla y Bastida was in Italy, he visited many other cities other than Rome. He was captivated by Italian culture, architecture, and local settings. During this period, the artist began to dedicate himself to landscape painting. In Italy, Sorolla would mature his style, creating the foundations of his impressive manner. He later returned to Valencia and also bought a residence in Madrid. The following years were of increasing recognition and commercial affluence, with the painter participating in the Salon in 1895 and the Exposition Universelle in 1899.
