Beach at Valencia (or Afternoon Sun) is an impressive genre painting by Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. Since he was a young man, Sorolla gathered quite the fame among his colleagues and art dealers in Spain, but his work was also revered throughout Europe and deeply admired in the US. In Beach at Valencia, it’s possible to see an excellent example of how the painter dealt with his famous beach scenes, using a hot palette and visible brushstrokes.
At only 15 years old, Sorolla applied and entered the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos. Sorolla’s determination was noted, and through his youth, he started to submit his works to local contests but had to take a brief pause in his practice because of his military service. After this, he applied for many grants and won one to study at the Spanish Academy in Rome. Academic painters such as Francisco Pradilla Ortiz, who had conquered acclaim through Orientalist-themed works, were fundamental to Sorolla’s development.
Using the money from his grant, the painter seized the opportunity to travel through Italy. During this period, he developed his vistas, landscape paintings of places he visited and studied the works of the Old Masters closely. After his education in the Spanish Academy, he returned to Spain, marrying Clotilde García del Castillo. The painter then bought a house in Madrid but also kept a residence in Valencia. Influenced by his teacher Ortiz and with a never-ending ambition, Sorolla passed through most of the 1890s, producing many artworks aimed at international exhibitions. Soon enough, he was participating in shows such as the Paris Salon. But it was by the end of the decade that he fully turned to the motifs that made his work so remarkable and with a lasting influence: genre paintings based on Valencia’s daily life.
Beach at Valencia (or Afternoon Sun) is a genre painting created in 1908 when Sorolla focused on this subject and made commissioned portraits. The picture has an orange and earthly palette, giving the viewer the sensation of a day of full-blown sun. There are five fisherwomen separating fishes in caskets at the forefront, while two men are taking the fishes from the boat to the shore. As Sorolla usually did, he placed the horizon high in the composition, giving the viewer an intimate perception of the activity.
