Joaquin Sorollaâs sublime painting Children in the Sea, painted in 1909 is a staggering achievement of composition, form, and style. Showing an older child leader a younger one by the hand as they wade through the still sea, the eye is drawn not to the joined hands in the centre of the painting, but instead to the dynamically parting ripples of water that appear to step aside for your young children. Showing a clear influence from the dominant medium of photography, Sorolla offers a unique viewpoint to this tender display of warmth. In the early twentieth century photography could not yet capture reproductions of life so efficiently, yet in a flourish of style Sorolla offers a mobile view of the figures in the painting, caught from behind, suggesting the panoramic continuation of the scene outside the confines of the frame. This unconventional snapshot of urban life places Sorolla more in the realm of Edgar Degas than with his fellow Impressionists, the trailblazing French painters of the 1870s Monet and Sisley.
Resonating with a home-town glow, Sorrola's beach views are characteristic of his fluid, liberated style; a style certainly influenced by the experimental tactics of an emerging European modernism. His scenes of this period are stark, personal, and joyous. Initially a painter of socially aware scenes, the artist shunned the sorrow and the pity of his early works and quite suddenly began painting Spanish-tinged reproductions of the stylistic idiosyncrasies of the French Impressionists, filled with the vibrancy and vitality of their deft brushwork. In the beaches of his native Valencia the artist would find his ideal subject and subsequently achieved great commercial acclaim. Perhaps included in his 1909 show at the Hispanic Society in New York, which drew 160,000 visitors in just one month, Children in the Sea is a remarkable achievement.
