Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

Often usually among the greatest Spanish painters of all time, Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida can be considered one of the most influential Iberian painters of his time, having received honors in many different countries and often engaging in friendly competition with John Singer Sargent, with whom he is said to have had a close amicable relationship. While many of his most famous paintings were portraits, both because of the popularity of that genre at the time and the profitability of working as a portrait artist, Sorolla y Bastida’s heart often seems to have been on the painting of wider scenes, especially those he felt faithfully represented his people’s culture, focusing on the ordinary people of Spain.
That penchant for portraying the regular Spanish life is beautifully exemplified in this 1896 oil on canvas, which has been in show in the Museo del Prado, in Madrid, and has, for a long time, integrated permanent collection of the Ca’Pesaro Palace in Venice, Italy. Produced at a time where Sorolla y Bastida’s career was already rather established, this scene could be seen as a preamble to his later and much-famed work on the province of Spain.
The work portrays a candid scene in what seems to be a Spanish household, where a group of people works together in the production or maintenance of a white ship sail. The group comprises five women of varied ages, the ones who seem to be younger actively sewing and the older women checking the work. There are also two men on the scene, where the younger man, wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat, seems to be helping the women with the bulky fabric, while the older man talks to the older woman, seemingly discussing the quality of the product. The scene takes place in what seems to be a backyard or patio, in an outside area covered in vines, which protect the workers from the intense Spanish sun.
The composition relies strongly on perspective, providing us with a window into a time and place, seen from an angle that seems to place the observer inside the action. A yellow tint permeates the whole composition, giving it a feeling of a warm summer day, and one can almost hear the chatter of the women and the breaking of the waves of the sea that can be seen through the doorway.
