Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

While the subject matter should be the artist's primary focus when creating, the beginning of the 20th century gave us a revival of technique and experimentation being valued over the very subject matter being portrayed. Although his style might appear to be somewhat bent towards the traditional, the Spaniard Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida was an artist who, during his career, portrayed increasingly banal subjects to focus his efforts on the technique and style of his work.
Born in Valencia, Sorolla y Bastida is said to have always felt connected to the sea and to those who routinely earn their living from it. Throughout his career, the painter portrayed these people in various situations, both at sea and home. He would go through phases focusing on fishers, women walking on the beach, the multitude of tasks those who lived from the sea. At the beginning of the 1900s, Sorolla y Bastida would go through a phase of painting children at the beach, resulting in one of his most famous paintings, La hora del baño 1904.
Here, we have another example of that phase, portraying a little girl with auburn blonde hair standing on the sand by the surf. The girl's facial expression shows fear and resoluteness as she gazes into the sea, ignoring the naked children playing in the background. Wearing a white dress, she sticks her stomach forward in a typical childish pose, and it is hard to know whether she is not in the water out of fear or because she is not allowed to.
Yet, experts have said that the most crucial point in these child paintings is not the model. Instead, the artist's primary focus is on the rendering of light and material, meaning that the girl's dress would have been more significant for Sorolla y Bastida than the one wearing it. This point could be further explored considering how paintings from that phase vary in mood and feel according to the artist's choice of the color palette to portray the lighting.
