Maria Con Sombrero (Maria with Hat) is a beautiful portrait painting by Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. The protagonist of a rags-to-riches story, Sorolla, rose from a family of artisans to one of the most renowned Spanish artists. Sorolla has a varied body of work, ranging from historical and mythological motifs to more intimate pieces, such as his artworks based on real-life observation of the Spanish beaches and his stunning portraits. Maria Con Sombrero is a captivating painting done with a restricted palette. Maria Sorolla, the picture's subject, was the painter's eldest daughter and had a painting career herself.
When Joaquin Sorolla was only 15 years old, he entered the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos. Sorolla, who was orphaned at a very early age, was brought up by his uncle, who worked as a locksmith. Since his uncle had a low income, Sorolla was employed as an apprentice when he was a kid. He was also enrolled at the Escuela de Artesanos, where he was introduced to the basics of drawing. After finishing his time at the Escuela de Bellas Artes, he started participating in art contests. After serving the military, he won an excellent grant to complete his education in Rome. Historical painters such as Francisco Pradilla Ortiz, one of his teachers, were fundamental for developing his mature style.
Throughout the 1880s, Sorolla explored Italy, where he had the chance to admire firsthand the masterpieces by the Old Masters. At the beginning of the 1890s, the painter married Clotilde García del Castillo, Maria's mother. The Sorollas had a house in Valencia and Madrid, where the artist could negotiate with dealers or get in touch with the national art circuit. In Valencia, where he would make some of his most remarkable pictures. Sorolla knew that he had to play the market's game, and in doing so, he picked historical and mythological subjects, which were highly praised and sought by buyers.
Maria Con Sombrero (Maria with Hat) is a portrait painting measuring 80 x 40 cm (31.5 x 15.7 in) and presently belongs to a private collection. Some can argue that because of the artwork's theme and the background's gestural-like quality, that it was possibly created out of a pure passion for painting and his love for his daughter. Maria occupies almost the entirety of the composition. She is wearing a light green coat, and her face is the most detailed section of the painting. Her sombrero was rendered with an intense black, while a few green spots can be noticed. The background is almost abstract, done in fast strokes. Maria Con Sombrero (Maria with Hat) is a stellar example of Sorolla's skill in giving a momentaneous aspect to the painting while making a very accurate portrait.
