Noon on the beach of Valencia is a beautiful beach scene by the Spanish artist Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida. Sorolla stood out as an impressive artist even from an early age. Still, it was his mature work, characterized by gestural brushstrokes and a vivid color harmony, that gathered him famed across Europe and in the United States during his lifetime. Noon on the beach of Valencia is an excellent example of the different techniques that Sorolla employed and how he explored the use of light through both color and brushwork.
Joaquín Sorolla had his upbringing by his uncle, who was a locksmith. This personal association made the artist develop a profound respect for artisans throughout his life and why he first got drawing lessons. After his classes in a school for artisans, Sorolla entered the Escuela de Bellas Artes de San Carlos, 15 years old at the time. Soon enough, he began applying for contests, working primarily with seascapes. Eventually, he earned a grant from the Spanish Academy. The institution was in Rome, and there the young artist completed his education. His teacher Francisco Pradilla Ortiz's influence is very noticeable in his early works, especially those dealing with historical subjects.
The money from the grant Sorolla received was enough to provide him home and food for years in Italy. He traveled around the country, visiting many cities and studying masterpieces from the past. In this period, the painter started to explore the landscape genre, which became an integral aspect of his oeuvre. After his return to Spain, he established himself in both Valencia and Madrid. Sorolla's name reached prominence through his participation in international exhibitions. He painted many canvases influenced by his master Ortiz, exploring mythological, historical, and Orientalist motifs. In some years, Sorolla ceased being known only in Spain and was exhibiting in Paris, Munich, and many other cities.
Noon on the beach of Valencia is one of the stunning beach oil paintings of Sorolla. He painted the picture in 1904, and its dimensions are 64×97 cm. Contrary to the usual Sorolla palette, which is very hot, Noon on the beach of Valencia has colder hues, with the sea done with dark blues, purple, white, and lilac. The parasol at the top portion of the picture is yellow and contrasts with the rest of the color scheme. Brushwork-wise, the picture is one of the most gestural by the artist, rendering the kid's figure and the couple with fast brushstrokes, very similar to the famous Impressionist movement.
