Joaquin Sorolla's 1909 canvas Strolling along the Seashore is a work created in the Impressionist style of Auguste Renoir or Edgar Degas. The tone, themes, and visual language of the canvas are heavily infused with Impressionistic ideals: the seashore and water are formed from light and confident dabs of color, creating a constantly intermingling array of tactile forms and textures that surround and cluster the figures. The masterly reproduction of charismatic gait of the strolling women reminds the viewer of the effect and presence of natural light in the painting; as each of the pair try to shield their garments from the gathering wind. Indeed, Degas, the preeminent painter of modern life, is an apt comparison. Initially Sorolla, like Degas, painted scenes imbued with a revelatory social realism, shunning idyllic views and preferring to represent contemporary life as they saw it and felt it. Sorolla, deemed by many to be the Spanish incarnation of the Impressionists, characterised his work with an expressive reproduction of the effects of the Valencian sunlight. But in the early twentieth century Sorolla suddenly turned his back on painting canvases filled with sadness and pity and focused on forging Impressionist reproductions of the effects of shimmering light and vibrant color.
Suffused with a local luminescence, the artist's beach scenes are emblematic of his loose, free style, influenced by the avant-garde movements of his day but not restricted to just one. His views are vivid, idiosyncratic, and celebratory. Taking to the beaches of his hometown of Valencia, Sorolla's new-found fascination would draw immense success. Strolling along the Seashore coincides with a sudden period of commercial acclaim in which the artist would tour the capital cities of Europe with his sell-out one man shows. Finding greater success with paintings the joys of life, both incarnations of Sorolla's style remains remarkably resonant.
