Cottage in a Cornfield is an oil painting by John Constable, one of the most inventive artists from his decade. He not only followed the ground settled by previous painters such as Thomas Gainsborough and Sir Joshua Reynolds, but he also expanded upon the creative possibilities of landscape painting. During Constable’s time, landscape was understood as a third-rate genre, while mythological, historical, and portrait paintings, which had a significant flow of commissioners, were at the top of the hierarchy. Constable was able to change this mindset with his big scale and stunning works, influencing significantly French painters like Gericault and Delacroix. Cottage in a Cornfield is an example of Constable’s mastery as a painter and his sunny and vivid pictures.
Through documentation and material analysis, the painter started Cottage in a Cornfield around 1817 but finished it only in 1833. The picture participated in the Royal Academy show of that year and now belongs to the Victoria and Albert Museum. Much of Constable’s later output has more of a melancholic feeling to them because of his wife’s passing in 1828. But this piece began during the previous decade. It features early Constable, who was specializing in depicting the sunny afternoons at Suffolk county and developing his detailed and vivid way of painting.
Cottage in a Cornfield is a 62 x 51cm oil painting created with the palette that Constable had established during his maturity. The painter used an abundant variety of greens, which allowed him to aesthetically explore the effects of sunlight. He also used earthly colors, such as brown and red, mainly used for details of flowers, a well as yellow both for the house and the cornfield. The entrance of the cottage features a rustic wooden fence, bright green grass, and wildflowers on each side. Underneath the shade, a donkey rests near some branches on the left. Inside the property, Constable features a yellow-green grass that reaches the horizon. The house was positioned off-center, slightly to the left, and there are many dark blue-green trees in the distance. The sky occupies more than a half of the picture, and as usual, Constable painted the clouds flawlessly.
