Golding Constable's Flower Garden is an artwork by the famous British artist John Constable. Enjoying late success and appraisal in his life, Constable faced some hardships during the beginning of his career. For instance, during a significant time part of his life, he didn't make sufficient income to marry his long-time fiancée, Maria Bicknell, who belonged to a family of jurists. Constable's choice of subject was undervalued in the Academic circuit, as landscape always came after religious and mythological motifs as well as portraiture, a genre that the rising bourgeoisie had quite an interest in. Through his resilience and commitment to painting and depicting his surroundings, Constable became known as one of the major influences for the late Romanticists and the Impressionists. Golding Constable's Flower Garden is an example of the painter's early mature work, or the "Suffolk pictures," which focused on the region that the artist grew up in.
Golding Constable was the painter's father. The Constable family was an affluent one and had a business related to corn. On the one hand, his father's business helped Constable through his worst financial times; on the other, it pressured the young man for quite a while not to pursue an artistic career. Today, the family's former lands are known as the "Constable Country," part of the Stour Valley in the division of Suffolk and Essex county. East Bergholt, where he grew up and his family resided, is depicted in this artwork. This painting, along with another that shows Constable's residence, has a personal connotation both to him and his father: they were painted around one year after Constable's mother had died in the gardens. Unfortunately, his father passed away in 1816, a year after this painting was done.
Golding Constable's Flower Garden is an oil on canvas. Like many paintings by the artist during this period, it depicts a rural scene in sunny weather. Two-thirds of the composition is occupied by the garden itself, done in a yellow-green, indicating the sun's intense presence, and a darker green used for the shadows of trees and other visual elements. There is a group of flowers in the picture's bottom right, which is probably the picture's most colorful area. There are yellow, white, red, and blue petals among them. The houses, which are at the left and middle of the composition, were painted in white and a reddish-brown, creating a contrast with the painting's prevalent greens.
