Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds c. 1825 is an oil painting by British artist John Constable. Constable was a fundamental artist for the shift from 19th-century painting to the Modernist spirit that marked the beginning of the 20th-century. Constable's oeuvre is based on the attentive and detailed observation of real-life settings. While he was a sort of rival to J. M. W. Turner, they both respected each other's work and were influences for the Impressionists. Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds is another excellent example of Constable's skill in working with landscapes: the audience is presented with a very detailed rendition of the Salisbury Cathedral.
The viewpoint that Constable adopted for this painting posits the spectator witnessing it at the ground level, creating a greater immersion for the audience. A road appears in the bottom left of the picture, leading to the entrance to the Cathedral's territory. The road is painted in varying browns, from a warmer to dark brown, indicating the spots the sun is illuminating. Constable painted the trees as attraction points to the eye, creating a dynamic composition and emphasizing the distance of the audience's view to the Cathedral. The trees were painted in grey, browns, and greens. Constable shows all his familiarity with the British flora, accurately painting molds, the texture of the trunks, fungi growing, and many details that are only capable of being seen when looked closely. It is, also, in the tree branches that the viewer can notice the painter's more gestural approach: the branches seem to be done alla prima, in rough and direct strokes.
The image is primarily light and cold, with green, blue, and white being the most present colors. Constable breaks away from this in many details, such as in the yellow mushrooms in the tree close to the pond or the red flowers on the bottom left. In front of the Cathedral, one can notice some cattle drinking water and eating grass in the middle of the composition. Passing a fence and entering the Cathedral's grounds is the picture's commissioner: John Fisher, bishop of Salisbury and one of Constable's best friends. Constable made an interesting arrangement with the clouds, which also occupy a considerable part of the canvas. There are also some spots where the linen of the canvas can be seen, giving it a subtle rough quality.
