Salisbury Cathedral From the Meadows, 1831 is an oil painting by the British artist John Constable. Constable is one of the most important painters of his time. He became deeply admired by many of the fundamental artists at the beginning of Modernism, such as the painters associated with the Barbizon School. Having an extensive practice of en plein air painting, Constable went out for hikes in which he produced many sketches. Today, this production is admired for its visible brushstrokes and Impressionist quality. Salisbury Cathedral From the Meadows is a beautiful example of his late-career pictures and represents a more melancholic facet of the artist. According to the painter himself, this was his best work.
This picture can be complemented with Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds, which also depicts the Salisbury Cathedral but from another angle. But here, there is a relatively uncommon trait for a Constable picture: most of his works are characterized by sunny daylight, and here, the cloudy skies even suggest the idea of a possible storm coming. Aligned with the viewer's eyes, in the lower section of the composition, one can notice a dog. The animal is looking at a cart with three horses passing through the water, another familiar figure in the painter's work and a possible allusion to The Hay Wain. The water is painted in a light blue and dark grey, creating a visual rhyme to the blue portions of the sky.
The composition is almost divided in the middle by the horizontal line, which is slightly closer to the bottom. While the region to the extreme right is a warm and light green, the Cathedral is done in darker hues, suggesting rain. The rainbow in the sky exhibits the weather's ambiguity: while there is rain in some parts, intense sun rays are emerging from the clouds in the top right. This picture was painted one year after Constable's wife's death, and the brooding sky can be read as a metaphor for his own emotional turmoil. Salisbury was where they had spent their honeymoon and the place that his closest friend John Fisher lived. The painting seems to be a strong reflection of Constable's career, bringing forth motifs of his body of work and dramatically rearranging them. It also sheds light on his recent personal loss and what painting meant to him.
