View of Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds is an oil on canvas by the painter John Constable. Constable was a 19th-century artist from England. Alongside J. M. W. Turner, he reinvented the landscape genre and pushed its formal and thematic boundaries. While landscape painting was, like many other genres, created with idealized compositions, Constable always painted what he perceived, an aesthetic principle that went to become one of the Modernist stances as well. The painter's work is characterized by his depictions of England's rural regions, for a certain idyllic quality to them, to his unique way of representing light, color, and the sky. View of Salisbury Cathedral from the Bishop's Grounds c.1822 is one of the preparatory studies Constable created for an artwork with the same name, finished circa 1825.
The artwork is now part of the Victoria and Albert Museum's Collection in London and measures 34.6 x 44 in (88 x 112 cm). Before making his final masterpieces, Constable used to make many sketches and then 2 to 3 complete oil studies, where he experimented with composition and color before settling on what he wanted. Compared to his piece from 1825, this is a much more yellow and warmer picture. It also has more of a linear quality, with precise figures, trees, and other objects with clear outlines. The predominant colors of the palette are brown, green, blue, and white. In a relatively simple subject, Constable introduces an interesting visual element: the branches, leaves, and position of the trees create movement and rhythm for the eye, breaking away from the linear figures and building.
The bottom section of the painting consists of the green grass, the pond where the cattle are drinking, and the walking road's reddish-brown. Constable was able to render the surfaces and texture of trees with impressive fidelity. The painting's main subject is located at the center-right and was done in light whites and blues. Compared to the final version, the sky is more homogenized, giving the idea of tranquility. The picture's commissioner, and personal friend of Constable, John Fisher, is represented by the man walking and pointing his cane to the Cathedral.
