A Doe Rabbit and her Three Young is a wonderful oil on canvas by the excellent artist John Frederick Herring Snr. The original painting was done in 1851 when Frederick Herring Snr made many depictions of rabbits. John Frederick Herring Snr was a prominent 19th-century painter. His work focused on animals, and he worked with traditional sports competitions, such as the horse racing events of The Derby. A Doe Rabbit and her Three Young is a part of a less known side of Frederick Herring’s career, but nonetheless an equally great one.
The picture features a large female rabbit and three little ones, probably a mother with her offspring. The bigger rabbit is black and white, with most of its head and back black and the lower parts white. This rabbit occupies the composition’s center and has its head turned to the right side. A couple of brown rabbits are on its right side with their backs turned to the audience, and in front of them is a black rabbit. The ground is a darker tone of brown. Herring applied a very earthy palette that evokes a sense of coziness.
The rabbits are painted very realistically. Despite not having formal training, maybe only some years as a student of local painters, Herring Snr developed a strong realistic manner. He was different from the more symbolist-driven painters of this period, such as the Pre-Raphaelite Society, or the atmospheric works of painters such as John Atkinson Grimshaw and James Abbott McNeill Whistler. Herring Snr brings a high contrast realism. This trait is strengthened by the tremendous anatomic accuracy of his depictions and his masterful use of lighting to create different sorts of surfaces.
Occupying most of the background and located further from the group, there is a sizeable amount of hay. This indicates that the rabbits aren’t depicted in the wilderness, but in a rural domestic setting, which is the case in all rabbit pictures the artist created during the 1850s. This group of works presents its viewers with an affective perspective of British life in the rural areas. The pieces are beautifully painted and are most of Herring’s group paintings, a rarity in his body of work that has many pictures of champion riders with their horses.
