John Frederick Herring (Senior)'s 1815 equine painting Filho da Puta is a reproduction from life of the likeness of that year's winner of the Great St. Leger at Doncaster. A renown racehorse in it's day, the Filho da Puta is an early work by the pre-eminent animal painter of the mid-nineteenth century. With little to no classical training, Herring Snr's heroic equine canvases garnered immense popular acclaim, earned his appointment as Animal Painter to HRH the Duchess of Kent and a prestigious commission from Queen Victoria who patronised his work until the artist's death. The commercial appeal of Herring Snr's portraits cannot be underestimated at a time when horse-racing captured the hearts of minds of the nation's populace. Herring added the senior to his name some time after the painting of Filho da Puta, to distinguish himself from his son who would become a great horse-painter himself.
Originally a stage-coachman manning the busy High Flyer route from London to York, Herring Snr emerged from humble origins with an intimate working knowledge of equine movement and anatomy. Finding a more lucrative living in painting signage, Herring Snr appears to have had only a commercial motivation in utilizing his artistic talents. During his early career, in which the figurative reproduction of the Great St. Leger winner was painted, the artist moved from his driving career in London to live and work in Doncaster, eventually painting 33 winners of the St Leger race held there.
As the age of the automobile swept horses from the intimate confines of metropolitan centres back into rural life, it is often jarring to modern eyes to consider the popular tradition of equine portraiture that stretches back as far as prehistoric cave art. Yet, in the nineteenth century sporting art, primary featuring the chief pursuit of the time; racing, was in high demand, spawning a generation of notable artists and even attracting the interest of more lauded names such as the Impressionist painter Edgar Degas.
