Bash Bish Falls I is an incredible oil on canvas by the 19th-century painter John Frederick Kensett. Unfortunately, the artwork’s location and date are not known. Kensett was one of the leading painters of his time. He was from the 2nd generation of The Hudson River School, and his work was particularly inspired by the painter Thomas Cole. Still, soon, Kensett matured and did less-dramatic works, refining his treatment and being known for the perfection in which he depicted oceans and his attention to detail. Bash Bish Falls I is a captivating work focused on a precise depiction of the heart of the United States.
The artwork was painted on a horizontal canvas. The painting’s lower area is filled with water coming from the falls. The painting’s palette is significantly reduced, yet in his complex manner, Kensett creates a variety of tones and gradations, allowing him to define shading and volume with sheer precision. The water of the lower area, with the unique transparency Kensett could render with his brush, is brown, showing the reflection of the stones and the lower area beneath the water. The use of water is distinctive of Kensett’s oeuvre, and it appears in almost all of his paintings.
The rocks in the center of the lower area begin to conduct the audience’s gaze. The smooth surface of the water takes the public’s eye to the falls at the center, gushing with energy and life. To both sides of the composition, high rock columns are painted with the utmost precision, showing the texture and aspect of rocks with impressive fidelity. Green leaves and vegetation grow on both columns, breaking from their light surface and creating a dynamic composition.
At the highest part of the canvas, the vegetation is more abundant. Bigger branches and leaves are extending themselves towards the picture’s center. The sky was painted with a seducing soft blue, contrasting with the darker areas of the image. The columns and plants form converging lines towards the picture’s background and center, conducting the audience’s vision towards the falls again. Bash Bish Falls I is a painting done with stunning precision and shows the natural beauties of the United States with passion and vigor.
