John Singer Sargent painted the nature scene entitled A Backwater at Wargrave in 1887. The artist is most well-known for his portrait paintings but produced many beautiful landscapes as well. Early in his career, Sargent was very well received by the Paris Salon and the critics in general for his impressive traditional painting technique. He traveled around Europe to study painters like Diego Velazquez and Van Dyck in depth. The Baroque influence is evident in this work, primarily because of the dark contrasts and the realistic portrayal of the scene.
The artist gave a mysterious atmosphere to the nature of A Backwater at Wargrave as he played with the shadows cast on the water by the trees. The river takes about a third of the composition and was painted with dark shades of brown and black, and highlighted with shades of light blue and violet. The larger trees in the forefront are located on the right side of the canvas and contrast the bright sky in the background. There are many fallen leaves on the water, giving the effect of a flat surface. Sargent used different tonalities of green to depict detailed leaves on the trees of the forefront and background, as well as the grass of the banks. There is a trail on the side of the water in which the sun is the brightest.
During this period, Sargent was working with two distinct styles; traditional and modern painting. Carolus Duran was Sargent’s teacher in Paris, and he taught the artist how he could use the freedom of modern painting in his technical works. This gave the painter’s traditional oil portraits a unique edge and helped capture the essence of the sitter. A couple of years before painting this work, Sargent began working alongside Claude Oscar Monet and learned about Impressionistic painting, especially on working en plein air, meaning they painted landscapes on location. Although A Backwater at Wargrave, may or may not have been concluded outdoors, Sargent’s Impressionist influences can be seen in some areas of the painting, like with some visible and expressive brushstrokes and in the attention to light. Overall, the landscape has a dark and more classic color palette, reminiscent of Sargent’s more conservative work.
