John Singer Sargent began working on the captivating oil painting entitled A Gust of Wind in 1886 and concluded it during the next year. This work portrays Judith Gautier who appears in other paintings by the artist, like Judith Gautier and Judith Gautier I. Sargent would often choose to depict his friends in his experimental works. When his exhibition of the painting Madam X caused a scandal by the public, it was Gautier who gave him support by writing an article defending the portrait.
The painting A Gust of Wind is an example of Sargent’s experiences with Impressionistic painting. His career began with an academic background of classical painting. The painter traveled extensively around Europe and studied the works of the past masters in depth, having a particular influence from the dramatic Baroque style from artists like Diego Velazquez and Van Dyck. While studying with the young teacher Carolus Duran in Paris, Sargent learned to bend some of the rules of classic painting by following his instincts – a modern way of approaching his production. This balance gave the painter’s work a unique style, and he captured the essence of his sitters. In 1879, the Paris Salon awarded him with an Honorable Mention for his portrayal of his teacher, entitled Carolus-Duran. During this time, he became well known for this style of working and began receiving many commissioned portraits.
In parallel to his traditional portrait production, Sargent began experimenting with Impressionist paintings. By the 1870’s, the painter became friends with Claude Oscar Monet who taught him about the Impressionist movement. Sargent started painting en plein air alongside other modern painters, meaning they painted outdoors to capture the sunlight and the effects it had on a landscape and figures. There was also an influence of the Japanese art, which used unusual compositions and vibrant blocks of color.
The painting A Gust of Wind was probably done outdoors, even though it wasn’t concluded in one sitting. The model was painted from a lower viewpoint, a daring composition for Sargent. The expressive and rapid brushstrokes represent a windy day on the field. The ground is brown and ochre with thick strokes. The sky was painted with pure areas of light blue and some loose strokes of pure white. Gautier stands in the sun holding her long off-white dress with one hand and her large hat with the other.
