Painted in 1888, John Singer Sargent’s A Morning Walk is an elegant blend of the Impressionist style that influenced him so much as a young man, and the portrait style for which he became extraordinarily successful. The child of American expatriate parents, Sargent was born in Florence and moved around for much of his youth. Training in Paris before moving to London, the artist steadily earned international fame as a portrait painter. This fame was forged, in part, by the notoriety of his early submission to the Paris Salon, his Portrait of Madame X. An attempt to make a name as a society painter, the aforementioned canvas caused a scandal from which Sargent grew from infamy to acceptance. Endowed with an astounding technical ability to draw and sketch with a brush, without the need for under painting, Sargent was heralded as both a truly modern artist and a superficial lapdog of the rich.
A Morning Walk is an Impressionist reproduction of the likeness of the artist’s sister, Violet Ormond as the two stroll together in the gentle yet vivid light of the morning. The series of paintings Sargent created display a great similarity to Monet’s Woman with a Parasol, painted only two years previously. Monet’s painting was an impressionistic reproduction of an epiphanic moment, forging a boundless mosaic of swirling fabric and rushing wind, suggesting the infinite and intangible force of light and air. A close acquaintance of Monet, Sargent certainly shared the core values of the Impressionist painters who celebrated the reconciling qualities of the natural foliage, which encased and protected them and remained a constant despite the upheavals of domestic life. A Morning Walk is therefore a deeply personal work, mingling the artistic values that so invigorated his youth and the portrait style for which he came renowned.
