John Singer Sargent painted the group portrait entitled An Interior in Venice in 1898, located in the saloon of the Palazzo Barbaro on the Venetian Grand Canal. The artist portrays David Sargent Curtis, the painter’s distant cousin, along with his wife Ariana in the forefront. In the background appears Ralph Wormley Curtir, Sargent’s friend and Curtis’ son, next to Lisa de Wolfe Colt Curtis, his wife. The Palazzo Barbaro had many illustrious visitors like Claude Monet and the writer Henry James. This painting was made as a gift to Mrs. Curtis, but she seemingly declined because she thought her portrayal looked too old – Sargent did not agree.
At a young age, Sargent showed great talent for painting and his parents encouraged his artistic studies. Academically trained and influenced by past masters like Diego Velazquez, El Greco, and Van Dyck, Sargent was able to dominate his technique. After being the student of Carolus Duran in Paris, the painter lets go of some strict regulations of the academies and found his unique style, adopting some modern influences. He was praised by the Paris Salon, especially for his portraits, even receiving Honorable Mention for them.
During this period, Sargent would conclude many commissioned portraits of members of the high society, but ultimately he would grow tired of this style and move to other techniques and projects. In An Interior in Venice, the painter captures this luxurious scene with a touch of modern painting. The dramatic lighting used in the surroundings is reminiscent of the Baroque artists Sargent was so inspired by, but the visible and expressive brushstrokes are an evident influence of the Impressionists.
Mr. Curtis is placed in the bottom right corner of the canvas in dark clothing, facing his wife while flipping a page of a large book. Mrs. Curtis sits back on a chair looking straight at the viewer. She wears a long gray dress, and both are highlighted by a bright yellow light. Ralph Curtis is seen on the left side of the painting on the background, wearing a fashionable tuxedo with white pants and leaning on an ornamented golden table. Lisa Curtis is depicted wearing a fancy long white dress and holds a teacup. The surroundings are filled with large round mirrors with decorated golden frames, as well as golden chandeliers and other items of value.
