John Singer Sargent created the Impressionistic painting entitled Breakfast in the Loggia in 1910. This artwork portrays Lady Richmond, who was married to the painter Sir William Blake Richmond – known for his mosaic of the cathedral of Saint Paul in London. The other woman portrayed in this work is Jane de Glehn, also seen in The Garden Wall and The Fountain. Sargent depicted a scene of beautiful architecture, vibrant vegetation, a welcoming painting with a warm and sunny atmosphere.
Almost centered on the canvas, the two women who sit at a table are placed in the forefront. On a white towel, they enjoy what seems to be wine, fruit, and cheese. The woman to the left wears a dark blue dress and is portrayed in a side view, while the other woman is facing the viewer and wears a light yellow blouse with a sun hat. They seem to be engaged in conversation and enjoying their meal together. The architecture is reminiscent of the Classic Greek culture – a large patio filled with high, ornamented arcs and columns. The far background shows a sculpture of a nude Goddess. The columns on the right side of the canvas are covered with branches filled with beautiful green leaves.
Sargent creates an interesting duality between modern and classic characteristics in this work. The environment and the elements are a reference to what the Classic Academies based their work on, while the technique used is fairly modern. Being influenced by the Impressionists throughout his career, Sargent learned to paint en plein air and capture the optical effects of sunlight – opposed to working with artificial lighting in a studio. Although it is not certain if Sargent painted Breakfast in the Loggia while working en plein air, this painting has an Impressionistic view of natural lighting.
Having a traditional background in Academic training, Sargent was a master of his craft at an early age. He was most known for portrait painting, and his fame grew at each commissioned painting he concluded. After a while, the artist sought different motifs, styles, and media. He enjoyed delving into the modern world of Impressionist painting, but because of his previous knowledge, he was able to create a unique style where classic and modern painting mix.
