John Singer Sargent painted the peaceful scene entitled By the River I in 1885. This was a turbulent time for the artist, as his reputation had taken a turn for the worst a year earlier when he exhibited Madam X causing a scandal from the audience. Because of the public’s repulse, Sargent traveled to America and Britain in search for new patrons to buy commissioned art. During the same year the artist painted By the River I, he also painted the Impressionistic masterpiece entitled Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose which boosted Sargent’s career once again.
Inspired by the Impressionists, in 1885 Sargent began to work en plein air with his new friend Claude Oscar Monet. They painted outdoors to observe and capture the fleeting effects of sunlight over a scene. The artwork By the River I was most likely painted en plein air. A woman wearing a fashionable dress of the period sits in a small boat while reading a book. The ruffled fabric of her long white skirt is a reference to the classic paintings, although being somewhat loosely painted. The woman’s long sleeve blouse is violet, matching the purple and blue flowers on her wicker hat. In a scene of stillness, she looks down at her book with a bland expression. The model also wears white gloves and has a green parasol leaning on her legs. The boat was painted in beautiful shades of ochre, orange, and brown, which create a complementary contrast with the colors used on the female figure.
The background is painted in a more loosely manner compared to the central image and gives a more Impressionistic view to the painting. The left side of the canvas shows the river in light blue and the farther it gets from the viewer, the darker the scene appears. The towering trees painted in dark blue, green and brown reflect on the water’s surface and blend in with another. What makes the separation of water and land visible are the white swans swimming on the far background that pop out in the shadows. The right side of the background is bathed in sunlight, creating a beautiful contrast. Sargent depicts vibrant green grass with specks of white and ochre flowers. There is a row of brown, red, and blue trees that follow the river banks and create unity in the artwork.
