John Singer Sargent traveled to the coast of the Mediterranean in Capri in 1878, outside of Naples bay in Italy, where he painted Capri Girl (or Among the Olive Trees, Capri). This was not a touristic location at the time, but it attracted many painters because of its distinct architecture and beautiful landscapes. During this period, the artist lived in a Paris, and his studio was located at a bohemian area called the Latin Quarter. This painting is part of the art collection of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
This painting portrays Rosina Ferrara, the artist’s muse who appears in many of his artworks, such as Rosina and Rosina, Capri. She was famous amongst many painters who were captivated by her exotic beauty, like Frank Hyde, Charles Sprague Pearce, and George Randolph Barse – who became her husband. In 2003, an exhibit called “Sargent’s Women” features Ferrara in the Adelson Gallery of New York City.
Initially, Sargent’s work was very academic, and he studied at prestigious academies of Europe. He was profoundly influenced by the classic masters of the past, like El Greco, Diego Velazquez, and Sir Anthony Van Dyck. But after being mentored by Carolus Duran in Paris, Sargent learned to bend some rules of traditional painting, creating his unique style. The artist’s paintings achieved a balance between a classic and modern style.
The work Capri Girl is an example of this blend of styles that Sargent perfected. Ferrara is leaning with her back against a diagonal thin tree trunk. She is wearing a modest dress, with a dark vest, puffy white sleeves, and a long brown skirt. Her posture is casual, her left arm stretches and rests over the tree, and her face is seen from the side while she looks down. Her dark hair and skin blend with the rest of the scene.
Opposed to the realistic portrayal of the model, the surroundings were painted in a more Impressionistic way. The field of grass is a mixture of ochre, brown, blue, and yellow in expressive brush strokes. The forefront holds some detailed yellow wildflowers. Sargent also depicted some rocks in the background with loose strokes of blue-gray. Farther to the back, darker areas are painted with blotches of paint, representing tall trees. The overall scene is basked in yellow sunlight, creating a warm atmosphere.
