John Singer Sargent painted the artwork of tremendous proportions entitled Gassed in 1919. This painting is a portrayal of a scene the artist witnessed during the first World War, as he was commissioned by the British War Memorials Committee to conclude this artwork, which was planned for the Hall of Remembrance. Its colossal size was inspired by the triptych entitled Battle of San Romano by Paolo Uccello – even though Sargent’s painting is twice its size, measuring more than two meters wide.
The painting shows a typical scene of the aftermath caused by an attack of mustard gas – so typical that in the far background, a group of men enjoy a game of soccer. Centered on the long, panoramic canvas, many blindfolded soldiers walk in single file holding on to the man in front of him. The gas burns the skin if the body is not protected enough and is very harmful to the eyes, as well as mucous membranes. The exposure to the gas can cause choking, vomiting, skin blisters, and even blindness. The men seem defeated, tired, and are using blindfolds because the intensity of the attack affected their eyes. Many soldiers have died because of the mustard gas exposure, and it can take up to two days up to several agonizing weeks for the person to pass away.
Sargent’s portrayal of the war was eye-opening for the public, as he shows how the soldiers did not have the appropriate protective gear to endure such attacks. On the right side of the canvas, another line of blindfolded men also towards the dressing station. The forefront of the artwork shows dozens of men laying on the ground tired and in pain. Some are asleep, others are holding their head, there is even a man drinking from a canteen, but all are blindfolded. Behind the central figures of the painting, more men lay defeated on the ground.
The artwork has an almost monochromatic color palette, primarily with shades of olive green, ochre and brown, because of the uniforms. The sky starts off a light green on the top of the canvas and gradually changes to red, and then blue, with a late evening moon visible near the horizon. This artwork brings the viewer the experience of the agonizing and cruel war.
