John Singer Sargent’s 1913 painting Girl Fishing at San Vigilio is a vivid and moving portrait of a young girl fishing beside Lake Garda in Northern Italy. Finished a year before the outbreak of war in Europe, the scene is an experiential reproduction of a moment of calm before all hell was unleashed. The artist, at this point reaching the final decade of his career, had a life-long fascination with the sea which began during his Atlantic voyages and journeys through the coasts of the Mediterranean in 1878. By 1913 Sargent had been consigned by his peers as both a living legend and a relic, a society portraitist who created vivid and incandescent reproductions of the ultra-rich. Yet, at sea and near water, Sargent seemed to shun the upper echelons of society life and instead found solace in earthy, familial, and serene subjects. His oil paintings of seascapes or beach scenes are towering, ambitious works, and Girl Fishing at San Vigilio is no exception.
Perhaps remembering his travels across Europe and the subsequent production of his masterpiece En Route pour la pêche (Setting out to Fish), painted in 1878 at the tender age of 22, Girl Fishing at San Vigilio is a resonant image, and almost stubbornly against the grain of modern art in 1913. When travelling through Italy in his youth Sargent was inspired by the waterfront galleries and local museums that displayed romantic, idealised paintings of the native peoples. It appears that right up until his death Sargent immersed himself in his Italian dream, producing vivid, incandescent studies of beachfronts, local families, and earthly textures, all rendered with a luminous range of tones and hues. Filled with nostalgia and isolation, Girl Fishing at San Vigilio is a moving reproduction of the artist’s early canvas, before fame and society life overtook him.
