Italian Girl with Fan

John Singer Sargent painted Gigia Viani in the magnificent portrait entitled Italian Girl with Fan in 1882. Most of the artist’s studies made in Venice feature Viani, a Venetian model. This painting stands out from the series produced during this time, as it is a large-scale piece that captivates the audience – measuring more than seven feet high.

During this year, Sargent painted the masterpiece entitled The Daughters of Edward Darley Boit, beautifully referencing Diego Velazquez’s Las Meninas. The artist had a traditional background of artistic studies and became most known for his portraits, which captivate the emotional depth of his sitters in exquisite technique. While working under the teachings of Carolus Duran, Sargent learned to break free from the extremely rigorous methods taught by the academies and work with a looser and more modern technique. His career had a significant boost in 1879, when his portrayal of his teacher, simply entitled Carolus-Duran, was awarded honorable mention in the Paris Salon. Sargent continued sending paintings to the prestigious exhibit until 1882, and although he intended to send Italian Girl with Fan at this year, he curiously enough did not.

The painting Italian Girl with Fan is comparable to a Baroque masterpiece, for Sargent used a contrasting lighting, creating a dramatic effect on the scene. He placed Viani centered on the canvas and broke the rigid composition with the use of light and shadow on the background. The model poses with one foot forward, holding her ruffled yellow skirt in one hand, creating more volume on the garment. She wears a white blouse with a burgundy scarf wrapped around her shoulders as well. Her other hand is behind her body and holding a large blue fan. Viani’s expression is peaceful, and she stares directly into the viewer's eyes.

Since Sargent was mainly a portrait artist – at least during this period of his career – the background of Italian Girl with Fan is simple and has a function to complement the central figure, and not take attention away from it. The drastic lighting almost divides the background into two areas; the left side with lighter shades of brown and ochre, and the right side with a dramatic shadow of near pitch black, both with simple geometric shapes to convey perspective. The ground creates a beautiful gradient effect with a warm brown pigment.
