John Singer Sargent painted the landscape entitled Olive Trees, Corfu in 1909. The painter traveled from Venice to Villa Soteriotisa with Eliza Wedgwood, where they stayed for about two months. During this year, the fifty-three-year-old artist was awarded the prestigious Order of Leopold from Belgium, as well as the Order of Merit by France.
The painter built his career on oil portraits, as he was immensely praised for this style of work. Having a great passion for classic painting, Sargent was academically trained and traveled throughout Europe to study the work of his favorite masters in depth. While studying in Paris under the wing of Carolus Duran, the painter gained the confidence to trust his instincts and bend the rigid rules of traditional painting. Although he painted portraits of impeccable technique, Sargent also enjoyed looser styles of working, like Impressionism.
It was in 1885 when Sargent painted alongside his friend Claude Oscar Monet, who taught him about the Impressionist movement. This group of modern painters mostly worked en plein air, meaning they painted outdoors – a very different approach than the academic painters, who worked in their studio. This audacious way of working approached the artists to nature and made it possible for them to observe the natural lighting over a landscape. Giving an impression of sunlight with expressive brushstrokes was a bold move for an artist like Sargent, but he enjoyed the challenge. Unfortunately, his Impressionistic paintings didn’t grab the critics attention as much as the other modern painters like Pierre Auguste Renoir or Monet, and Sargent eventually stopped producing them for exhibits.
In Olive Trees, Corfu, Sargent captured the essence of Impressionistic painting with visible brushstrokes. There are tall, thin, eerie trees in the forefront with dark shades of brown and blue. Along with some trees in the background, the artist created a dark horizontal stripe in the middle of the canvas. The bottom of the work is livelier with vibrant colors. There is a bright field of grass and two men taking a stroll on the left. The human figures are loosely painted but perfectly represented. On the right, Sargent brings warm shades of brown and red, while the horizon is cool with purple mountain tops and a grey-blue sky.
