John Singer Sargent painted On the Verandah (Ironbound Island, Maine) towards the end of his life, beginning in 1921 and concluding the work a year later. This painting represents a typical scene of the American family and portrays Dwight and Edith Blaine in their summer house in Maine, as well as their two daughters, Margaret on the right and Elizabeth on the left.
The artist went through a different artistic path than most modern painters of the day. Sargent was extremely gifted from an early age, and his parents encouraged that he pursued the talents he was good at, and painting was one of them. The artist studied at artistic academies of Paris, where he learned precise techniques of the past masters, mostly the Baroque painters like Diego Velazquez and Van Dyck. Sargent also traveled around Europe to study their methods more profoundly, but he would soon learn to deconstruct his way of painting. Under the influence of his teacher Carolus Duran, Sargent began to let go of the strict regulations of academic art, ultimately giving his artworks more soul.
The Paris Salon received the painter well, especially his portrait paintings. In fact, Sargent received Honorable Mention in 1879 for his work entitled Carolus-Duran, which made him famous as a portrait artist. He began working with commissioned portraits for the high-class society, which took up most of his time. Although this theme was his strongest aspect, Sargent eventually grew tired of his patrons and was eager to work on new projects, like mural paintings.
After the death of his mother, who was a watercolor painter herself, Sargent felt the need to make the change he was already inclined to make and ultimately stopped painting commissioned portraits. His tendency to move in a more modern direction in painting grew stronger as he became friends with some Impressionists, like Claude Monet, who taught him about painting en plein air. Sargent began to work outside alongside modern painters and was open to experimenting with new techniques. He embraced watercolor and perfected his technique in a style that blends traditional and modern painting, as seen on On the Verandah. This artwork shows a scene of the daily life with visible brushstrokes and a beautiful combination of lively colors, as the Impressionists painted, but also a traditional way of realistically depicting perspective and figures.
