The official White House portrait of President Theodore Roosevelt painted by John Singer Sargent in 1903 is a gloriously stern figurative reproduction of the seminal American President painted by one of the most remarkable of all American painters.
After Roosevelt’s first Presidential portrait was criticised by the family for being too feline, Sargent was sought out as a reportedly more macho portrait painter capable of conjuring a more burly reproduction of the American leader. The accounts of the creation of the portrait and the interaction between these two characters are a remarkable and humorous testament to both men’s self-image and passion for perfection.
After searching the White House for the best source of lighting and for the setting in which the President felt the most at ease, both parties felt the situation was not right. Roosevelt, ever restless, remarked that Sargent did not know what he was looking for or what he wanted to find. Losing his patience with the President, Sargent snapped back that he did not know what was needed to pose properly for a portrait. Turning round at the top of the stairs Roosevelt turned and thumped his open palm down on the balustrade post, turning to look down upon the artist ascending the stairs and exclaimed: "Don't I?"
Succinctly summing up the personality and essence of this decisive yet impetuous man, Sargent created the reproduction from life and made sure that Roosevelt and the rest of the family would cherish the painting for the rest of their lives. By capturing the energy, conflict, and clarity of the President, Sargent further demonstrated the exuberant skill for portraiture that ensured the commissions and requests kept coming.
