John Singer Sargent painted a portrait of the British humanitarian Winifred Anna Cavendish-Bentinck in the painting entitled The Duchess of Portland during the year 1902. The Duchess was an animal welfare activist and was a Justice of the Peace for Nottinghamshire. Sargent captured her beauty, grace, and intelligence in this captivating portrait.
By the beginning of the artist’s career, the critics already praised his portrait painting. With a background in academic painting and being mentored by Carolus Duran, Sargent found his unique style by breaking some of the traditional rules and working with his intuition. He received an Honorable Mention by the Paris Salon of 1879 because of his artwork entitled Carolus-Duran which boosted his career as a portrait artist.
Sargent began receiving many commissioned paintings of influential people of the high-class society, like the Duchess. The artist’s domain on painting techniques and his willingness to bend the rules made his artwork captivating to the audience, especially his portraits which seemed to capture the essence of the sitter. Sargent traveled constantly, and during his time of studies, the artist explored Europe to study the past masters in depth. His main influences came from the Baroque painters like Sir Anthony Van Dyck and Diego Velazquez, as he often used dramatic lightings.
The artist’s dialog with the modern world of art helped him to loosen his technique from the formal technical standards of painting. Sargent learned to structure the work less before applying paint, as well as blending a realistic representation with visible brush strokes. This was a gradual change in his style, and by the end of his career, he was painting alongside the Impressionists.
In The Duchess of Portland, Sargent used a long, vertical canvas to portray this majestic female figure. The Duchess is standing next to a white marble mantelpiece with sculpted details, a reference to the culture of the ancient Greeks. Decorations in gold can also be seen near her. The model wears a long white satin dress with pearl details in the front, and a large, decorated standing collar. She appears to be caught in mid-walk because of her posture while holding a book in her hand. The red velvet cloak that slips off her shoulder gives a splash of vibrant color and also highlights her rosy cheeks.
