The American artist John Singer Sargent painted The Honourable Pauline Astor in 1898. The sitter, Pauline Astor was only in her late teens when the artist portrayed her, and she was the eldest daughter of William Waldorf Astor, an important American financer. Later in 1909, Sargent portrayed Nancy Witcher Langhorne, who was married to Astor’s brother, in a painting entitled Mrs. Waldorf Astor.
This period represented the peak of the artist’s career as a portrait painter, and he would work on dozens of oil portraits per year, as well as hundreds of commissioned portrait drawings. Studying classic painting techniques from an early age, encouraged by his parents, Sargent was exceptionally talented. His passionate, hard work paid off when he received an Honorable Mention from the prestigious Paris Salon for his painting Carolus-Duran. Being mentored by Carolus Duran himself, Sargent understood the balance how to work with his vast knowledge of classic painting, with the freedom brought by modern art.
By listening to his instincts and knowing when to bend the rules of the Academies, Sargent developed a unique style of painting which pleased the critics immensely. He was able to capture the essence of the sitter and blend a realistic portrayal with areas of visible and expressive brushstrokes. The painter eventually experimented with Impressionistic paintings by the end of his career, but never losing his classic background, like influences from the masters of the Baroque art.
The painting The Honourable Pauline Astor was done during the peak of the artist's portrait production. Miss Astor stands in a natural surrounding, wearing a pure white gown. She looks straight at the viewer with her chin held high and a faint smile. The sitter has small blue flowers in her hair and on her chest, as well as delicate pearl necklaces. Her clothing is almost regal, as she wears a silver-blue cloak, with brown fur lining while holding a matching fur muff in her hands. Her companion, a small Spaniel, tugs on her cloak, as if it were asking her for attention. This humored detail was uncommon in Sargent’s work but truly brings a different light to the scene. The background shows a beautiful landscape in loosely painted shades of brown, orange, and ochre, as well as a light blue sky.
