John Singer Sargent began working on the oil painting entitled Thistles in 1883 and concluded it only in 1884. This Impressionistic work can be seen in the Art Institute of Chicago. The artist’s career took an unexpected turn when he decided to experiment with a modern style of painting, as he based his learning on classical painting. With a talent for drawing and painting from an early age, Sargent’s parents were supportive of his abilities, which included music and literature as well – even though he flunked out of the traditional school system.
With an Academic training, Sargent achieved a prestigious level of realistic representation, but it was only after becoming Carolus Duran’s student in Paris, that he learned how to use his knowledge to create unique works of art. The artist began to trust his instincts and bend the strict guidelines of the academies. His production of commissioned traditional portraits was massive, but by 1885 he started working alongside Impressionist artists and experimenting with modern painting. His friend Claude Oscar Monet explained to him about painting en plein air, and he adopted this practice himself – in other words, he painted outdoors to observe the fleeting sunlight.
Although when Sargent painted Thistles, he had not yet begun experimenting with plein air painting, this artwork is very Impressionistic. The artist used a high horizon line, showing only a streak of the light blue sky and some yellow-white clouds. There are some dark trees on the horizon line as well, covering up some of the sky. The middle area of the canvas is painted in a single shade of dark red and some strokes of black as well. This area of pure color flattens the image, bringing a two-dimensional aspect to the scene – a characteristic also seen in Monet’s later work.
The forefront was painted with expressive strokes of golden ochre. The thistles were painted with bright pigments of white and light blue, contrasting with the dominating warm pigments of the composition and creating a harmony with the sky. The way Sargent painted the vegetation in this artwork gives a beautiful movement to the scene, as is a slight breeze was passing. The fantastical colors used in this landscape is also an active influence of the Impressionists.
