John Singer Sargent concluded the watercolor painting entitled Villa Torlonia, Frascati in 1907 while visiting the central town of Italy. During his stay, the artist made many studies of his surroundings, as well as the masterpiece entitled The Fountain, Villa Torlonia, Frascati, Italy, where he portrays his friends Jane Emmet and Wilfred de Glehn.
During this period, the artist took a radical change of direction in his career. Sargent worked extensively on commissioned oil portraits for wealthy patrons and eventually grew tired of this kind of painting. Although his work was always true to who he was as an artist, he often had to attend to the needs of the sitter and engage in conversation – something the painter didn’t always enjoy while working. In 1906, his mother, Mary Newbold Singer Sargent, passed away causing a mark in his life. She always supported his artistic career and inspired him to pursue watercolor painting, as she enjoyed this media as well. During the year Sargent went to Frascati, he stopped taking commissioned portraits altogether and dedicated himself to other projects.
Sargent was experimenting with Impressionistic paintings for more than twenty-years, as his friend Claude Oscar Monet taught him about this modern style. They worked together on several occasions, painting en plein air to capture the natural lighting of their surroundings – opposing the traditional way of painting in the studio. Working with watercolor was a perfect match for this outdoor technique, as seen in Villa Torlonia, Frascati. The Impressionists had a great love for nature and working outdoors allowed them to experience their surroundings. The Japanese woodcut prints served as a great inspiration for their work, mainly because of their familiar subjects, unusual compositions, and vibrant colors.
The painting shows a large ornamented fountain in shades of brown, ochre, green, and yellow. The brushstrokes used for the water are expressive and beautifully depicts the movement in shades of blue and violet. There is a balcony over the fountain with dark blue and green trees in the background. This landscape depicts typical ancient Greek architecture but is represented in a modern way – a characteristic in Sargent’s work. The artist had a domain on traditional painting techniques which were highly praised by the critics, but he still craved for the experimentation Impressionism allowed.
