The depth of details in A Lily Pond does not diminish the subtlety and elegance of this beautiful painting. When compared to other pieces from the Neo-Classical painter John William Godward, A Lily Pond is rather vibrant and vivid.
Godward portrays a model sitting by the side of a pond, in the middle of a large patio. This setting is relatively common among the paintings of the artist and references the Classic buildings, previously seen in Roman and Greek pieces. These balconies and patios are often ornamented with columns and dense vegetation. Marble statues and busts also help create this ideal environment.
The model is sitting with her legs crossed on the edge of the pond. The structure is made of heavy marble stones with lightly oxidated borders between the stones, painted with a darker color. Water and time have worn the inside wall of the artificial lake, depicted in beautiful and sophisticated detail. The fractions on these stones are impressive.
The muse is holding a leaf and using it to stir the water delicately. The mirrored surface of the water reflects part of her garments and some of the background. Although, the water is mostly covered in vegetation, with small leaves of Victoria Amazonica and some white flowers.
Behind her, to the left-hand side, there is a heavily ornamented niche with a statue inside. The exterior columns seem to be made of several different patches of marble of different colors. The arch and frieze are white with few details of the stone. The basis has a bronze head, possibly serving as a tap, as there are signs of oxidation coming out of it.
Inside the niche, there is a white marble statue of a semi-nude man, very Classical. It also appears that the wall behind the statue is covered by a mosaic pattern.
The model is the focal point of the painting and is centered in the composition. She wears a long orange gown, composed of a light, thin fabric, creating an impressive texture, adorning the shapes of her body. On the waist, she has another material, on a more pink color, held together by a front knot. The whole ensemble is tied around her chest, breast, and arms by a green piece of green rope. Godward painted the same garment in other artworks as well, like in Dolce Far Niente.
