John William Waterhouse concluded the intimate oil painting entitled The Toilet in 1889. He was an artist of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, representing the second generation of the movement which began a year before he was born, in 1848. The original artists of the Brotherhood consisted of painters, critics, and poets who focused on art before Raphael – as the name states. They clashed with some impositions of the academies, mostly varying in color palette and themes, like Arthurian legends and other interpretations on the classic Greek mythology.
Painted during the rise of his artistic career, The Toilet depicts a scene in which a woman and a child get cleaned and pampered in the bath – or toilet. Waterhouse would often portray beautiful, sensual women in a medieval atmosphere, like Ophelia, painted the same year. The artist often painted his interpretation of ancient myths, containing Goddesses and nymphs. He began his career as an academic painter, studying at the Royal Academy of Art in London and was featured in many exhibits throughout his life. It was after coming in contact with the Pre-Raphaelite art that the artist let go of the rigid impositions of the academy.
In The Toilet, the Waterhouse depicts a large, open room that is destined as the bathroom. There are white stone walls and a significant amount of vegetation, suggesting an open ceiling. In the forefront, a little girl sits on the ground wearing a burgundy and pink dress. She has her dark hair in a ponytail and has a violet flower over her ear. The child has a necklace of dark beads on her neck and observes herself on a small, round mirror in her hand. Next to her, on the white tile floor, blue, green, and white beaded necklaces – possibly rosaries – lay on the ground.
A sizeable patterned rug lays on the step in which the woman sits upon, falling to the floor and exceeds the limits of the canvas. There is much vegetation that creates great a stripe in the middle of the composition, as well as some red, yellow, and violet flowers. The background features a white wall with a dark entrance and a large ceramic vase in front. There are large fan leaves as well as branches climbing up the horizontal dark ropes that cross the canvas.
