The Caernarvon Castle is a watercolor painting by the British artist William Turner, and it was made in the year of 1799. As model for this work, Turner used the several sketches of the Caernarvon Castle which he had painted during a visit to Wales in the year before. The structure of the composition is a reference to a work by Claude Lorrain. It is said that Turner was so moved by a sunset painting by this French artist, that he cried while looking at it. A depiction of a centralized setting sun over water, with buildings contrasting the bright sky. This was a construction Turner repeated in a few of his works, such as the Caernarvon Castle.
Willian Turner is known for using not so well lasting materials. The pigments used on the majority of his works, watercolors and oil paintings, had a very luminous quality to them. However, we cannot access them anymore. It is probable that this particular watercolor had different hues. The color palette we see today is mainly shades of blue and yellow. The result is an insinuation of green, which comes from the mixture of both colors.
The sun is not in the center of the canvas, but a little to the left. Its reflection extends itself from the middle line of the picture till the bottom border. On the right side of the painting, is the Castle. Its magnitude becomes visible when in comparison to the small human figures that, next to the building, push a boat into the water.
On the left side of the picture, two sailing boats are inside the river, very close to the shore. We can see a forest extending itself along the left riverside. The color of the treetops is of a similar shade of green as the resultant hue of the castle. The artist used yellow on many elements of the composition. Around the sun in the sky, on the reflection in the water, on the riverbanks. As this is a warm color, the outcome is a landscape which seems to be on a summer day.
Best known for his paintings full of brushstrokes, transparencies, and superpositions of colors, in a style that resembles in many aspects the following art movement of the Impressionists, Turner has many paintings that don’t present this very distinct and even unique style. This is an example of a painting that Turner created and was very aligned with the Romantic works of the time.
