The oil on canvas Calais Pier, with French Possards Preparing for Sea, an English Packeet Arriving was rendered in 1803 by the English artist Joseph Mallord William Turner. As he was part of the Romantic movement, he depicted nature majestically. His canvases frequently showed the fury of storms and seas, which is the case of this particular work.
Turner’s painting style differed from that of his contemporaries. The Romanticism usually comprises realistic techniques. The illusion of a three dimension picture was always sought, but Turner’s works went in a different direction. This particular work does not show the dissolved outlines and masses of paint for which the artist is most famous.
The scene shows the wooden pier on the right side of the composition. It is surrounded by an agitated sea. Standing on it, are several people apparently getting ready to embark on the boat which is to the left of the pier. The approaching storm can be noticed by many elements. The dark clouds on the left side of the canvas, the waves of the water which reach the pier, and the wind visible on the dresses of the women.
A little bit more than half of the foreground is taken by the rough sea. The other part is the wooden structure of the pier. The point of view from which Turner painted this scene is from someone standing on this structure of the harbor.
In the center of the composition, there is a sailboat which its color stands out against the dark clouds. All the other vessels are in shadow. The sky shows a color gradient which starts with a dark tone on the upper left corner of the canvas and ends with a light grey on the right side. In the central area of the sky, there is an opening in the clouds, through which we can see the blue sky.
Marines are the most recurrent subject in Turner’s production. This is a subject that allowed him to explore the paint possibilities, for he liked to depict the natural phenomena along with the moods, impressions, and sensations that he got while experiencing such phenomena.
At the beginning of his life as an artist, Turner worked mainly with watercolors. By the time this canvas was painted he had switched to oil paintings, but without abandoning the techniques, he developed in his watercolors.
