The painting entitled Dudley, Worcestershire was painted by the English artist Joseph Mallord William Turner in 1832. It shows a harbor at night in an apparently industrial area of the city. Even though this rendering differs from the one Turner usually does, it has the most frequent elements in the artist’s work: a landscape with water and boats.
This is not a marine, but the rendering of a river. Turner gave the painting a colorful, but still bleak look. The smoke coming out of several chimneys helps with the gloomy mood of the composition, but the canvas is divided into three color areas. In the foreground, there are the waters of the river, which were rendered in a purple hue. On the right side of the canvas, Turner painted the constructions with shades of red. The rest of the picture, including the sky and the hill covered in fabrics and houses, is blue.
On the bottom right corner, some men are walking along with their horses. On the opposite side of the composition, we can see two men by the river. It is not clear if they are on a boat. In the foreground, there is a vessel carrying tires. Further, in the river, other boats are laden with undistinguishable packages.
On the blue area of the painting, there’s a construction with a chimney emitting smoke. The shape that the smoke forms in the air has clear outlines. Its movement guides the viewer to the upper side of the canvas, where we see a white sky and a hill covered by the city. This is an element that stands out in the composition.
This is a work that Turner did during his mature phase. However, he did not use the dissolved outlines characteristic of this period in his production, but the lights he applied to the composition indicate already the direction his renderings will take.
Even though Turner was part of the Romanticism, he developed an innovative technique in his works which refer to that of the Impressionists. However, the Impressionism did not start until after Turner’s death. The main difference between his works and that of the Impressionists is that Turner usually didn’t use thick masses of paint, which Impressionist artists such as Monet, frequently did.
