The oil painting entitled Fishermen upon a lee-shore in squally weather by the English artist Joseph Mallord William Turner was made in 1802 and first exhibited in the Royal Academy of Arts. It shows Turner’s most recurrent subject: a marine.
This artist from the Romanticism is known for his incredibly expressive renderings of the sea and especially during severe weather. In his late works he went further than any of his contemporaries, and in addition to depicting landscapes in a mesmerizing manner, he started painting the sensations that such natural phenomena evoked in him.
This particular painting shows an earlier phase in Turner’s career, for the shapes on the canvas are all very distinguishable and have clear, well-defined outlines. In the foreground, we can see the seashore, which was painted in a gradient from a bright shade of beige on the left side of the canvas to a dark brown on the right. There is a wave surprisingly near the shore which has brought with it the fishermen’s boat back to the cost.
This vessel does not have its sails up, but even still it was carried in the wrong direction out of the sea. The fishermen seem to be also agitated. The mast of their boat is pointing to the upper right corner of the canvas. On the left side of the composition, there is another sailing ship which its mast mirrors the one of the fishermen’s boat.
These two masts pointing in opposite directions creates a space in the center of the composition, which Turner exploited to give a stronger impact to the clearing in the clouds that stands upon it. In the distance, we can see there are many other ships at sea. These were rendered with very dark shades of brown which match that of the shore and sea in the foreground. The sky is depicted without any blue areas. Masses of grey clouds take over it all, except for the central part which shows a lighter hue of grey and even some colors that insinuate sunlight.
Even though Turner came before the Impressionist movement, this choice of subjects and his incredible sensibility would bring him to develop a technique that put together both the marvels of nature and the state of mind that it evoked in the artist. He did this by embracing the materiality of the paintings, instead of seeking only the three-dimensional, realistic illusion that the other Romantics sought.
