Currently, for safety, we're able to ship framed paintings only up to a certain size. Once the maximum size is reached, the framing option is automatically disabled.
However, if you are interested in stretching or framing a painting larger than 24x36 inches (60x90 cm), please contact one of our customer success associates or let us know in your order notes. We will send you a catalog of our large framing styles and pricing options.
Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.
The canvas Snow Storm, Hannibal and his Army crossing the Alps, by the English painter Joseph Mallord William Turner was rendered in 1812. It shows how the power of an army is nothing when faced with the power of nature, in this case, a snowstorm.
Turner was very nationalist and was interested in subjects of war. The army of Hannibal was depicted in this painting as an analogy to Napoleon, for the Napoleonic Wars were happening at is time. We can see here the usual magnitude with which nature was depicted by the Romantics. Being a Romantic himself, Turner tried to show how small, and without strength, even an army is when compared to nature.
In the foreground, the artist used shades of browns to render the army. However, a general cool palette takes over the whole composition. The dark clouds that dominate the upper side of the canvas are almost black and give the composition a swirling movement. The sun is still visible through the clouds. Its yellow color contrasts with the black that surrounds it. The white mass that starts in the upper right corner balances the clear sky on the left side of the painting.
Willian Turner had a complicated childhood, for his only sister died when he was around eight years old. After two years, his mother was hospitalized in a sanatorium. The young artist was then sent to live with an uncle. His father worked as a barber and continued seeing Willian during this time. He even exposed on the walls of the barber shop the drawings his son did while living with his uncle.
His life as an artist developed well. In the beginning, he worked as a draftsman for architectural projects. At that time this was a good job, and Turner managed to pay for his education with the money he got drawing. After he got in the Royal Academy, at the age 14, he was oriented to develop more his landscapes, instead of the perspective works he had been focusing on the years before.
In his mature works, Turner developed a unique style. He took the techniques of watercolor paintings and applied them with the oil paintings. He diluted the pigments in the oil bindings in a way that he could use transparencies.
