The oil painting Sun Setting over a Lake was painted in 1840 by the Romantic artist Joseph Mallord William Turner. Even though he was an English man, it is believed that this particular rendering might be of the Swiss lake Lucerne, for Turner liked to visit the area during the last decade of his life in the 1840s.
This is a perfect sample of Turner’s most famous style. The setting sun can be recognized on the left side of the canvas. The rest of the landscape, however, is entirely dissolved, blurred. Looking at it today, after all the art movements that followed the Romanticism, such as the Expressionism and especially the German Abstract Expressionism, one could think this was an abstract work. It is impressive how Turner managed to convey the image of a sunset with such loose painting. There are no sharp contrasts, other than the one of the sun against the sky.
The composition can be divided into two: the left side, which Turner painted in a warm palette with shades of yellow and orange; and the right side, painted in cool hues of blue. It is possible that the right portion of the picture represents the snowy mountains, for the Lucerne Lake was surrounded by Alpine mountains.
This is one of Turner’s masterpieces. It shows the technique that the artist developed himself, which is commonly applied in watercolors, but Turner transferred them into the oil paintings. This meant he diluted the pigments with the bindings, in this case, the linseed oil, and applied it on the canvas in layerings.
As this was a pioneering way of painting, Turner got many controversial reviews. Some considered him a genius for his innovations both in style and in technical approaches. Other said his paintings lacked finish. When compared to the works of his fellow Romantic artists, it becomes clear how some thought of it as unfinished. However, if we consider all the artistic movements that followed, like the Impressionism, we understand how it is coherence with its historical context and with the drastic changes that were taking place in the art world at the time.
Turner was the precursor of this style which takes the renderings of reality to another level, where the painting conveys not only the aesthetic aspect of landscapes and marines but also the emotions that they provoke in the spectator.
