Few are the paintings which can so wholly illustrate the concept of what it means for a landscape to be “picturesque” and this piece produced by Turner during a tour of Northern England, visiting his friend, the historian Walter Fawkes. Produced in the early years of Turner’s career in 1798, and now in possession of the University of Liverpool Art Gallery, the depiction of an old mill evokes aspects of the sublime while contraposing nature and industry in a contrast that is emblematic of 18th century England.
Painted in light cold colors, the landscape scene presents in its foreground two buildings connected by a wooden bridge, between which flows a river, moving the watermills attached to the constructions. Crucial for the industrial development and population growth of England, these contraptions represented the moving force of the British Empire, the very wheels of progress.
As such, it is understandable that Turner would be amazed by them, amazement which produced this idyllic landscape, in which the influence of man in nature can be felt, but has not yet reached a level of disrupting the natural order, instead harnessing that power for progress.
If the foreground of the scene speaks of progress and industry, in the background lie rolling hills and mountains, mostly untouched by progress, presenting a green background for the greyness of human development. The interest in this frontier between civilization and the wilderness is very telling of the artist’s upbringing in the crowded London, as it informs the composition and choice of colors.
If the idea behind the “picturesque” is not to portray nature with fidelity, but to rearrange it to fit an ideal of the sublime and beautiful, then there can be no other definition of Turner’s work in this piece. He arranges the natural and artificial landscape in a way which flows from nature, through humanity and back to nature. Even the vegetation interspersed in the human-made environment suggests a certain harmony.
An otherwise unassuming landscape that would, nevertheless, inform Turner’s style for years to come, starting a theme of interaction between humanity and nature which will permeate most of his paintings. Its value lies beyond the beautiful landscape masterfully portrayed by the artist, as it is at the beginning of a long trajectory of exploration of the human versus its environment, placing it among the most interesting pieces available.
