The oil painting The Thames near Walton Bridges was made in 1805 by the English artist Joseph Mallord William Turner. It is believed that Turner rendered the river en plein air. This means he did not develop this work in his studio, but rather while on board of his boat. One of Turner’s favorite subjects was of rivers and marines and he became most famous for his renderings of storms and rough seas.
This is one of the small paintings of the artist. As he had to carry all the materials needed for making it, he chose to take small mahogany supports which facilitated the transportation. This style of rendering, observing the subject during the whole process, outdoors, was not widespread amongst the Romantics. Turner was one of the few that painted like this, which reinforces the Impressionist characteristics that his works present.
Even though his paintings are always classified as being part of the Romanticism, his style approached that of the Impressionists, for the two-dimensionality of the works are kept evident, and he also shows a keen interest in expressing the natural phenomena as well as the moods and sensations that come with them.
In this particular work, Turner depicted a river. On its left side, we can see a road and a house. Facing it from inside the river is a boat with a couple of people on board. There are many trees on both sides of the painting, but the ones on the right show a dark tone which was balanced by the artist also using a dark tone on the reflected trees on the left side.
The sky was painted in a clear blue, and it shows several clouds near the horizon. In the distance, we can see the Walton Bridges against a mountain range. This part of the composition, even though it is a detail, is very reach, for the color of the mountains is blue and orange brushstrokes directly above them insinuate a sunset. In front of it, the bridge has yellowish tones, which contrasts with the blue and makes the composition even more colorful.
This English scenery was rendered with visible brushstrokes, one of Turner’s techniques that didn’t match that of his fellow Romantic painters. However, he usually maintained elements with a realistic appearance, which does not happen in this specific work, probably because it was made outdoors which did not allow the artist to spend much time on the rendering.
