Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson, 1758-1805

Lemuel-Francis Abbott's portrait of the British naval hero Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson is one of the most memorable images of the man whose statue stands proudly atop the column that bares his name in London's Trafalgar Square. The most accomplished of all the reproductions from life that the notable portraitist Abbott painted of Nelson, this particular canvas was certainly painted after 1797 as it depicts the Rear-Admiral wearing a number of medals awarded for his victory at the Battle of St Vincent of that year. As one of the most acclaimed figures of the Napoleonic Wars, Nelson was the figurehead of the proudest years of British naval history, when the great masted ships of the era ruled the waves and finally defeated the French powers. Originally painted for a Captain at the hospital at Greenwich in London, Abbott's Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson was painted from life, the subject sitting for the painter on two separate occasions. This particular work became the piece from which almost all of the artist's subsequent portraits of Nelson would be wrought, copying the original over forty times. Although declared mentally insane shortly after painting this particular canvas, Abbott's reputation for painting the key naval figures of his day remained firmly engrained in popular memory.

Nelson is adorned in countless visual cues that remind the viewer of his place in British history. The hanging sleeve of his right arm a testament to the loss of the limb at the battle of Santa Cruz, the epaulettes that denote his recent ascension in rank, all speak of a figure whose calm face belies the turbulence of his recent experience. Without doubt the most ubiquitous image of the great man, Abbott's Rear-Admiral Sir Horatio Nelson is a startling reproduction of a man whose presence is forever associated with poise and heroic stoicism.
