Ordering the return of their weapons, the leader of the Gauls, the ancient ancestors of the French, Vercingetorix, downs his arms before Julius Caesar, following decades of succession resistance to the Roman Empire. Lionel Noel Royer's 1899 canvas Vercingetorix throws down his arms at the feet of Julius Caesar is a startling image of nationalism, nation-hood, and endurance, and a remarkable reproduction of a historical reality seen through the telescope of turn-of-the-century France. It is a dramatic and stirring vision of the Gaulish defeat at the siege of Alesia which, owing to its enduring power and ubiquitousness, became the archetypal image of the ancient Gauls, and paved the way for the popular iconography of Asterix and Obelix. Showing a great diversity and abundance in arms, posture and clothing, Royer bought together all the elements of a truly theatrical performance. Vercingetorix appears in the middle of the frame, physically dominating the figure of Julius Caesar who is sidelined both pictorially and morally. Although an image of defeat, the aggressor is imbued with the damning qualities of the imperialist fighting those who rightfully lay claim to the land of their ancestors.
Based on recent archaeological findings, Royer's canvas was no imagined reproduction. Carefully pieced together from evidence found around the late-nineteenth century, the historic image of Vercingetorix does bare some inaccuracies. Yet the artist's intentions win out; Vercingetorix triumphs as a figure of internal nobility and bravery whose stoicism and humility allows the viewer to side with him over the triumphant Roman powers. It is a curious depiction of nation-hood, perhaps seeming slightly cynical to those more attuned to triumphalist images of war. Yet, for Royer it is human dignity that is the true victor in the battle for heads and minds, not brute force.
