Ludwig Knaus' A Forester at Home is a characteristic work by one of the leading German naturalist painters of the late-nineteenth century. Gaining early fame as a genre painter and portraitist, Knaus' images would come to pervade German popular culture, seized upon by the embryonic advertising industry of the early twentieth century. An offshoot of Realism and Romanticism, Naturalism in the visual arts was reflective of a pan-European urge to reject artificiality and embrace the emotional charge and dramatic resonance of the natural world. Turning their backs on the upheavals enacted by the Industrial Revolution, many European artists turned to the rolling landscapes of their homelands for their source of identity and subject-matter. Circulated amongst the populace by means of photographic reproductions and engravings, Knaus' iconic visions of the long-departed German lifestyle of his native Wiesbaden have ensured his continued place in popular consciousness. Spending the 1850s travelling extensively throughout Europe, Knaus exhibited at the historic 1855 Paris World Expo, leading to the commercial recognition that would last throughout his career.
By the late nineteenth-century Knaus was appointed to the post of Royal Prussian Professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Berlin. Firmly secure in the canon of German painting, Knaus focused on figurative reproductions of folklore scenes, such as that of A Forester at Home. Such was the acclaim of these works that the National Gallery in Berlin commissioned him to paint portraits in the same style of the historian Theodor Mommsen and the physicist Hermann von Helmholtz. As his successes waned he returned to his life on the road throughout Central and Western Europe, dying in Berlin just before the outbreak of World War I. Although representative of the Academic tradition that the catastrophic world war swept away, Knaus' style is reflective of his time and location.
