Unframed rolled canvas orders will arrive rolled inside a protective tube with an extra 1.5" white canvas on all sides so you can easily frame it locally.

Marianne Preindelsberger, now considered one of the leading painters of Victorian England, was born in Austria and is best remembered for abandoning oil paint and focusing on compositions rendered on a flat spatial plane using the ancient fresco techniques of tempera and gesso. Her vivid and moving reproduction of the likenesses of Jesus and the Virgin Mary, as seen in her painting Madonna and Child, is a product of her rigorous academic training, unique for a woman of the period. Beginning at the Munich Academy, Stokes earned a scholarship to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and studied under Pascal Adolphe Dagnan-Bouveret. Painting the surroundings of Paris that so influenced the Impressionists, Stokes became deeply fascinated by the Naturalism of Jules Bastien-Lepage and Jean-François Millet, and finally met an English landscape painter, Adrian Scott Stokes and married him a year later. Their deep and productive relationship took her to England permanently where she discovered the work of the Pre-Raphaelite brotherhood and turned towards visions of the medieval world, reproductions of religious and classical daily life, and the fresco techniques that would usher in her commercial popularity.
A popular subject for painters throughout the centuries, the Madonna and Child or The Virgin and Child was often utilized to portray essentialist themes of love, tenderness, maternal attachment, and devotion. Yet, in the Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox tradition, the image is a holy one, and are revered as icons. Stokes' use of the fresco technique thus evokes the Byzantine motifs that would so influence artists like Klimt, and draws attention to the work of art as holy object. An ambitious and progressive Academic painter, Stokes' work deserves a critical revision in light of her pioneering techniques that would influence the proto-Modernist works of her contemporaries.
