Martin Johnson Heade's A Magnolia On Red Velvet, painted between 1888-90 is a magnificent still life depicting five magnolia flowers in different stages of development and bloom. Heade's reproduction from life articulates the variety of contrasting, competing, and comparable textures, forging an immensely tactile still life. The coarse stems, the waxy layer of leaves seems to set off the lushness of the velvet, and all these divergent qualities come together to form a work of authority and visual power. Heade had a preference to landscape works, spending his childhood living abroad in Europe and America, surrounded by the splendour of the natural world. Moving to Florida in 1883, Heade noticed the tropical magnolia flower and began to study the natural history and horticulture of the area. Managing to find variation, idiosyncratic differences, and hidden features in each of his immense body of paintings dealing with the subject of the magnolia, Heade is without doubt the preeminent modern American still-life master.
Rediscovered by modern eyes in the 1940s, Heade's marsh landscapes and tropical studies appealed to a new generation of artists who too were attempting to represent their own take on the American experience. The themes and stylistic concerns of the Romanticist movement were a significant influence in the cultural atmosphere of Heade's time, imbuing his work with a yearning towards the comforts of nature. Becoming acquainted with a number of members of the Hudson River School, Heade was fascinated by documenting the constantly expanding territory of the United States, planning to publish a volume on Tropical Flowers. The idea never reached fruition, but the artist's eager, encyclopaedic urge to document the world around is evident in much of his work. His magnolias are testament to his ravenous appetite for new subjects, textures, and organisms.
