Blue Morpho Butterfly is a painting done by Martin Johnson Heade. It’s one of the many paintings by the artist in which there isn’t a single genre but a mixture of landscape painting and still-life. The picture was made after the first trip that Martin Johnson took to Brazil, spawning many canvases called The Gems of Brazil. It was one of his most successful series. Still, they were created with the intention of becoming a book of illustrations, along with his sketches while visiting the South American country, which unfortunately didn’t happen.
Martin Johnson Heade was a 19th-century painter. Known today for his breathtaking landscapes, ranging from the depiction of salt marshes in Florida to Brazilian beaches, passing through the exquisite view of forests and flowers, Johnson Heade had a peculiar artistic formation. He was educated by a regional artist and began his work through portraits. These first paintings still have a stiff aspect, which vastly changed after his stay in Rome for two years, where he kept studying and applying himself to master the techniques of oil painting.
Returning to the US and debuting as a professional artist, he eventually settled in New York. There he met the famed Frederic Edwin Church. Through the contact with Church and the Hudson River School, the growing interest he had for landscape was finally fully fleshed. Particularly entranced by the structure of flowers and the hummingbird’s majestic appearance, Martin Johnson Heade made his first trip to Brazil in 1862, so he could observe them up close. Since then, his work changed, and he devoted himself to make a fair amount of paintings on the theme, even though he kept producing his regional landscapes and seascapes.
Blue Morpho Butterly was painted in 1863, right after his return from his first voyage. The painting has a dark grey background, which represents the sky. A fainting orange is next to the center of the picture, showing the last rays of the sunset. In the forefront, right in the middle of the composition, is the butterfly. One of its wings is a light blue, providing a luminescent point that attracts the viewer’s eye, while the other wing is black with little blue details of the structure. A vine hangs from the left top of the painting to the bottom right, which was painted with a very dark grey. On this vine, there are leaves and plants rendered in a yellow-green, creating other points of light in the composition.
