The painting Dawn, today part of Boston's Museum Of Fine Arts collection, is an oil on canvas created by Martin Johnson Heade. It represents a calming scene: a small boat sailing peacefully across the shore while the sun is coming up and the sky goes from its greyish blue to the vivid yellow rays of the day. Even though Heade worked extensively with landscapes and still-life, he always kept painting seascapes throughout the years. Among his other works on the subject, there are Becalmed Long Island Sound, Lake George, and Seascape Sunset.
Martin Johnson Heade was a prolific and singular 19th-century painter. His introduction to artistic practice was through the lectures of folk artists of his city, Lumbersville. Through the years, he refined his manner, going from straightforward structures to multilayered techniques. One of his works' main influences was Frederic Edwin Church, whom he met after moving to New York and shared a workspace for around ten years. Despite Heade's proximity with Church and his relatively modest commercial success, he wasn't hailed as many of his peers, and some of his works could even be found in flea markets. It was only from the 1940s that his importance was emphasized, and his career was better understood. Some of Heade's most celebrated works have been sold by auction houses at astonishing prices.
Early historians have placed Heade's oeuvre as a minor manifestation of the Hudson River School. The group of artists certainly had a significant influence on his work, especially how they dealt with light and their influence from Romanticism. Still, the painter's manner and subjects always differed from them, even more so after the 1870s when Martin Johnson started to focus on still-life painting.
Dawn is a rectangular oil on canvas with dimensions of 31.1 cm x 61.5 cm. The beach is a subject that Heade usually painted with the utmost feeling of peace, calm, and beauty. At the horizon, almost disappearing in the purple and pink clouds, there are two boats coming in the shore's direction. At a medium distance, we see a fisherman in his first hours of work while the birds fly nearby. The sand was painted in light brown, and the vegetation was rendered in cold greens on the top left of the composition. The painting exhibits an impressive color harmony, going from dark purple and light yellow tonalities to intense orange and greenish-blue colors on the areas where the rays of light haven't reached yet.
